Teaching statement:
I have always been a classic overachiever. Driven by a harsh, critical inner voice, I always pushed towards greater achievement with a healthy dose of self-flagellation. I wandered into yoga classes in college and grad school, finding the group dynamic engaging and keeping me coming back for more, and classes at UT RecSports were too budget-friendly for me to say no. It wasn’t until my teacher, a fellow graduate student, left the UT program to teach Mysore style at a local studio that I really started digging into the subtleties and the transformative power of Ashtanga Yoga. The practice changed from something I used to keep me physically fit, to a way I learned the depths of myself and accept my imperfections. I completed a 200hr TT at Yandara Yoga, and a year later my doctorate in Electrical Engineering and a 40hr Primary Series Teaching immersion with David Swenson and Shelley Washington. I’ve been teaching yoga since 2012 but have never felt as home as I have in the mysore room, whether as student or teacher. Like so many of the teachers who inspire me, I balance the life of a modern householder while weaving the lessons of Ashtanga into my daily life. I’m grateful to the teachers who have helped me find this path while living in Austin (Tracy, Selena, Eriko, Sarah, Jenny and Sharon) and to those who helped me grow and develop in both my practice and teaching while in Dallas (Jeff, Dean). My goal in teaching is to help others find the roots of their practice, and develop the introspection to live their yoga on and off the mat.
